This course guide provides an overview of the discipline and introduces you to some basic sociolinguistic concepts such as mother tongue and bilingualism. Unit 2 looks at issues in multilingual speech communities such as code-switching and code-mixing while Unit 3 focuses on language variation that occurs in relation to language users. Unit 4 is devoted to language variation that occurs in relation to its uses and explores issues such as style and sexist language. The last Unit delves into interactional sociolinguistics and provides input on discourse analysis, conversational analysis and critical discourse analysis.
