Description
This course guide introduces some of the ways in which the English language can be described and examines how it first developed in the British Isles (the Old English period). Unit 2 focuses on the history of English to the present day, from Middle English through the golden period of expansion during Shakespeare’s time, to standardisation. It also examines how English was exported worldwide in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries through colonisation and trade. Unit 3 deals with some of the characteristics of present day varieties of English and ways in which these varieties have been categorised (e.g., ESL, EFL, EIL, ELF). Unit 4 is designed to acquaint you with some of the ways in which English is currently being used internationally for communication, business, education and human development. The last unit examines how English is being used and resourced in technology and how English itself is changing as a result.
