Description
This course guide aims to introduce learner to an overview of the freight (cargo) transport industry with a focus on the fundamental concepts, techniques and applications. Freight transport management is different from the transportation of people. You will be able to distinguish the different modes of transport and their salient characteristics at the end of this course. Regardless of the mode of transport, the main elements of a transport system will be examined to provide you with an analysis of their interrelationship. Two of the key concepts of freight transport are unitisation and intermodalism. Unitisation relates to how goods are packed and transported in standardised loads whereas intermodalism is akin to the “web” which links unitisation, elements of a transport system and to some extent the different modes of transport. Throughout this course, learner will be exposed to examples in the local and international context to provide learner with an insight into the freight transport industry.
